We were in Tasmania on vacation. It was announced that a local school teacher, Mary, and the Danish Crown Prince had fallen in love and would be married. They had met at the Olympics just like the Queen and King of Sweden. Mary worked at a local school which was just up the street from where we were staying. We, of course, immediately went to see it. She was not there. The night after the announcement there was a great celebration held at the Islington Hotel the best 5 star hotel in Hobart. We dressed up as best we could and went down and joined in the celebration. It was a very special event for Hobart. Birgitta was thrilled just to be there. We mingled with the crowd, ate the buffet where the champagne flowed freely and no one ever asked who we were. They were having too much fun. Tasmanians are after all Aussies and know now to party. They did a very credible job of making it a real occasion. Mary, the school teacher, became the Crown Princess in a great wedding ceremony in Copenhagen and will be the next Queen. Birgitta had followed her every move since her marriage. It is so Scandinavian that a commoner can become royalty by marriage and it is accepted by all. It has happened in Norway, Sweden (twice) and will now happen in Denmark.
